Top Tips for Retaking the MCAT

Top Tips for Retaking the MCAT Unfortunately, even after months of preparation, students are sometimes faced with an MCAT score that lies below their goal. Though this certainly isnt a situation anyone necessarily wants to be in, coming to grips with the reality of what caused this outcome is paramount in improving your score the second time you attempt the exam. Below are some questions that will help you narrow down what went wrong the first time and ensure improvement on your retake. 1. How much did you study? The first thing you want to ensure is that you put in a sufficient amount of time preparing for the MCAT. Due to the vast volume of material covered on the exam, it takes approximately three to four months of dedicated study time to adequately prepare. Look back at your prep calendar and assess if you spent enough time. If not, create an appropriate study schedule now and stick to it for your second attempt. Since youve likely already done your fair share of reviewing, use the majority of your time to complete practice questions and exams as you move forward. 2. What did you focus on? A common problem many students have during MCAT prep is that they tend to focus on subjects they find easy, and hence enjoy, during the review process. You need to honestly assess your study period and recognize if you fell into this pattern. For instance, if you dread studying electricity and magnetism and consequently ended up spending less time reviewing that topic, that fact probably came through on your exam. In order to combat this, identify which topics you tend to avoid. While preparing for your retake, prioritize these topics and spend extra time on them, rather than shying away from them. If youre having trouble understanding the concepts, review notes from your undergraduate classes and consider periodically working with a tutor to clear things up. 3. Did you practice correctly? Completing practice question sets and practice examsare key to doing well on the MCAT. However, simply completing questions is not enough. Firstly, be sure that you are strictly timing all of your practice. Without time constraints, you may build bad habits that will be hard to reverse in the setting of an actual timed exam. Also, be sure that you are using practice as a method of review. When you go over question sets and exams, first look over which questions you answered incorrectly. Read the question explanations thoroughly and refer to your review materials. Fully understand why you missed the question and make note of which facts you need to know to ensure you dont miss a similar question in the future. Most importantly for your second attempt, be sure to use your practice question sets and exams to focus your review. Spend more time on topics and subjects that you score poorly on during practice, because these are likely the types of questions that you answered incorrectly during your first exam. If you find yourself guessing on many questions of a certain topic but happen to get them correct, be honest with yourself and spend extra time reviewing these topics as well. Practice questions are crucial in identifying your weak areas, so complete as many as possible as you prepare for the MCAT a second time. 4. How was test day? Think back to your test day and recall if there were any outside factors that may have affected your performance. Sometimes, especially if you had already addressed all of the factors above, anxiety can severely limit your focus and concentration. If you remember being excessively nervous, resolve to yourself that you will be calmer the second time. Now that you know exactly what to expect and will have additional preparation time under your belt, the kinks should be worked out. Overall, after attending to all of the above factors appropriately, most students will see a corresponding increase in their MCAT score. So dont be discouraged that youre re-attempting the exam rather, look at it as an opportunity to prove to yourself that you do, in fact, have what it takes to move on to medical school.

You can also get in touch with a dance school or a private tutor to get a taster session.A lot of schools and tutors offer the first hour free so that students can work out if it’s for them without having to sign up for the whole year.  Make sure you ask questions and fully participate in order to get the most out of this hour. Should Schools Teach Character

Should Schools Teach Character Americas schools are having a difficult time simply teaching students how to be proficient in reading, math and science. Thats why many schools completely ignore teaching basic character skills. Most schools do not effectively teach behavioral skills and proper attitudes/manners like cooperating, being on time, making eye-contact, speaking persuasively, etc, argues Jay Mathews in an article in the Washington Post. Some schools are trying to incorporate these basic skills into education, a practice known as character education; however, many schools are still ignoring them. Very few schools have actually made progress in character education, argues Mathews. Mathews cited a study in social and emotional learning (SEL education) that trains students to act and think in positive ways. The study suggested that strong SEL education can create better student achievement. However, the data does not yet measure effects on students lives and work after high school graduation. Students in social and emotional learning classes improved their test scores and grades by 11 percent, compared to similar students in standard classrooms without SEL education, according to the Impact of Enhancing Students Social and Emotional Learning: A Meta-Analysis of School-Based Universal Interventions study, by Joseph A. Durlak and Kriston B. Schellinger of Loyola University Chicago and Roger P. Weissberg, Allison B. Dymnicki and Rebecca D. Taylor of the University of Illinois at Chicago. The authors of the study determined that these results were significant. They also found that students in SEL education have better social skills, less emotional distress, less misbehavior (bullying or suspensions), more positive behavior and ultimately better attitudes. These effects continued for six months after the programs ended. SEL programs are successful at all educational levels (elementary, middle and high school) and in urban, suburban, and rural schools, although they have been studied least often in high schools and in rural areas, reads the study, according to the Washington Post. The authors stated the SEL education helps students become more confident in their learning, and thus try harder and rarely give up on more challenging concepts or classes. SEL education students are also self-motivated, setting high academic goals and constructing a personal, effective approach to learning. Other studies are contradictory. One from the Institute of Education Sciences suggests that seven of the most popular SEL education programs did not produce significant social or academic gains. Another study, the Child Development Report, suggested similar results, also stating that SEL education does not necessarily produce better attitudes and behavior. SEL education produces better results in smaller classrooms, especially when a teacher takes on the approach for one class, according to Mathews. School-wide comprehensive programs are more complicated to implement, causing problems and limiting their positive effects.

Follow 3 Principles To Improve Your GMAT Score

Follow 3 Principles To Improve Your GMAT Score GMAT MBA Admissions Blog Improving your academic performance, and really any type of performance (i.e., athletic, musical, professional, personal â€" you name it), is a function of following three important principles: Fuel your mind and body habitually Employ strategies methodically Practice the right skills deliberately My belief in these rules is based on my personal academic and professional experiences, my observations and discussions with MyGuru’s students and GMAT tutors, and from methodical research and review of books, articles, presentations, and podcasts on topics related to each of the rules. First, let’s introduce the rules in general (this post), and then discuss how to apply them specifically to improving your GMAT score (our next post). We’ll try to keep things short and simple in these blog posts, while fully covering the main ideas. Rule # 1: Fuel your mind and body habitually Adopt a “growth” mindset There is tons of research that shows your mindset can have a huge impact on how you perform in school, in sports, in music and the arts, and in anything else. People tend towards, in various aspects of their lives, two mindsets: fixed or growth. With a fixed mindset, you believe intellect, abilities, talents, and skills are very much “given” at birth. You have it, or you don’t. Mistakes are seen as evidence that you “don’t have it.” You can read more about how mindset influences success atmindsetonline.com. As a result, you avoid activities that you aren’t good at, and in which you are likely to make mistakes or perform poorly. For example, you may think you aren’t very good at standardized tests, and as a result you might be dreading the GMAT. With a growth mindset, you believe that ability, talent, skill, and intellect are things you can improve over time with practice, feedback, and guidance. Mistakes are viewed as opportunities to improve and learn, and you embrace the struggle. As a result, you tend to learn more, improve faster, and build skills in new areas. Believe in the link between nutrition, exercise, sleep, and performance All else equal, the person who eats better, exercises more, and gets more and better rest, will: Have higher cognitive function Perform better in athletics Get along better with others There are lots of studies and research on these topics, but they often seem so obvious that they are assuming to be minor or important. But, they really aren’t minor. For more information onhow cognitive function can be positively impacted by exercise, proper nutrition, and sleep, visit mindfull.spc.org. Adopting the growth mindset and improving your nutrition, exercise, and sleep are changes best made by building new habits slowly over time, to ensure they stick. Rule # 2: Employ a strategy methodically In one of the most popular blog articles of all time on Harvard Business Review’s web-site, Heidi Grant Halvorson, a PhD from the Columbia Business School, wrote about the nine things that successful people do differently. In that article, she writes that “decades of research on achievement suggests that successful people reach their goals not simply because of who they are, but more often because of what they do.” But, in an accompanying podcast episode where she talks about this blog post, she describes this a little differently. Instead, she says, quite simply, successful people use strategies to reach their goals. Indeed, in my former life as a business strategy consultant we often defined strategy as a clear explanation or description of what you will and will not do to achieve a goal of increasing the market value of a company. When developing business strategy, that meant making decisions about products and services to offer (or not), capabilities to build (or not), assets to buy (or not), etc. The outcome was a prioritized list of decisions and actions covering where and how the company was going to complete in the marketplace. The process of developing a strategy tends to involve: Setting a goal Gathering all of the information required to understand how to meet that goal Prioritizing a list of issues that will have the greatest impact on your ability to meet your goal Developing alternative courses of action (i.e., different paths you could take) Evaluating those alternatives using whatever criteria are relevant Choose the best alternative (or designing one that integrates the best of several) Developing a detailed plan of action to execute that alternative Rule # 3: Build the right skills deliberately As was mentioned in rule #1 and #2, contrary to popular belief, success comes from doing specific things differently, not from being intrinsically smarter or more talented. It turns out that even in highly intellectual fields, like mathematics, people viewed as geniuses have, in fact, spent hundreds or thousands more hours than anyone else in their field practicing their craft with an intense, focused, and mistake-embracing way. They have built their skills methodically and deliberately over time. In fact, Einstein once said, “it’s not that I’m so smart, I just stay with the problems longer.” To be clear, simply working hard or working for a long time is actually not enough. The research shows that skills are built by practicing in what is called a “deliberate” fashion, where you break skills down into component parts, practice with intense focus, get feedback, and learn immediately from mistakes to build good habits. This is the way to build skill in all areas of life: mathematics, reading comprehension, music, basketball, etc. More on deliberate practice and how it builds skills can be found on the Talent Code Blog. In in our next post, we’ll apply these three rules to improving your GMAT score specifically. Also, please visit our GMAT tutoring page to learn more about how MyGuru can help you achieve your best score possible.
